One of the Youngest Volcanoes on Earth

Parícutin is a cinder cone volcano located in the state of Michoacán, Mexico — one of the youngest volcanoes on Earth, famous for its sudden emergence from a cornfield in 1943. Its birth was witnessed by farmer Dionisio Pulido on February 20, 1943, making it the only volcano in recorded history whose entire life cycle was documented by humanity.

The eruption of Parícutin is an event of immense importance in volcanology. In just 24 hours, the volcano grew to 50 meters (164 feet) tall. Within a year, it had reached 365 meters (1,197 feet). Over nine active years, its lava flows swallowed the village of San Juan Parangaricutiro — leaving only the church towers rising from a black sea of volcanic rock.

Today, Paricutín is recognized as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, drawing travelers, scientists, and adventurers from every corner of the globe. Come celebrate its 83rd anniversary and witness this extraordinary landscape for yourself.

The Church That Refused to Fall

Of all the sights in the Paricutín area, none is more haunting or more magnificent than the ruined church of San Juan Parangaricutiro. When lava poured from the volcano between 1943 and 1952, it swallowed the entire village — homes, streets, fields — leaving only the twin towers and the apse of the old church rising from a black sea of solidified lava.

Walking across the lava field to reach these stone towers is one of the most otherworldly experiences in all of Mexico. The landscape of jagged obsidian rock stretches to the horizon, broken only by the ancient stonework — a testament to both nature’s overwhelming power and the enduring spirit of the Purépecha people who once called this place home.

Today, the site is a place of pilgrimage, reflection, and wonder. Our guides share the authentic stories of the families who witnessed the eruption, the miraculous survival of certain statues carried to safety, and the deep cultural and spiritual meaning this place holds for the people of Michoacán.

All of our routes include a visit to the buried church and the surrounding lava field. It is a sight you will carry with you for the rest of your life.

The Science of Paricutín

A Volcano Born Before Witnesses

On February 20, 1943, farmer Dionisio Pulido heard a hissing sound beneath his cornfield near the Purépecha village of Angahuan. By nightfall, fire and ash erupted from the earth. Within a week, a 100-meter cone had formed — the start of nine years of eruption.

Cinder Cone Formation

Paricutín is the classic example of a cinder cone — the simplest type of volcano. Fragments of scoria and volcanic rock were blasted into the air and fell back around the vent, building the symmetrical cone we see today rising above the lava fields of Michoacán.

Lava Field Landscape

The surrounding landscape is defined by vast fields of black basaltic lava — some areas smooth pahoehoe, others sharp and jagged a’a lava. Crossing this terrain on foot is a humbling reminder of the Earth’s raw creative and destructive power.

A Monogenetic Volcano

Unlike large stratovolcanoes that erupt over millions of years, Paricutín is monogenetic — it had a single, complete eruption cycle. This makes it uniquely valuable to science: a fully documented beginning, middle, and end of a volcano’s entire life.
